A big change for trainee gas engineers |
Once you are qualified, by law you will need to become registered with Gas Safe Register. Safety is at the heart of Gas Safe Register Many thousands of gas engineers have registered and are working with Gas Safe Register to raise public awareness around gas safety. A better informed public will demand the safe and qualified services of a Gas Safe registered engineer, which will help stop illegal workers and reduce the many tragic gas related deaths and injuries each year. The public now recognise the Gas Safe Register logo as the only mark of gas safety in Great Britain and the Isle of Man. It has been made it clear to everyone that they should no longer look for the CORGI registration shield. A large publicity campaign and advertising across the country means that all customers will be demanding to see the new Gas Safe Register ID card. Your legal requirements Please be reminded that there is only one gas registration scheme and it remains a legal requirement for you to be a Gas Safe registered engineer if you plan to undertake gas work within the scope of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 in Great Britain and the Isle of Man. You can register online at www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call us on 0800 408 5577. You may wish to note that there is a discount for those who register online. Qualifications Gas Safe Register only accepts evidence of competence in gas safety as follows: • National Accredited Certification Scheme for individual Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS) • ACS aligned National/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (NVQ/SVQ) Evidence of competence must be less than five years old. All gas safety assessments are sent to us by the awarding body electronically. As a minimum requirement, any registration application will need to include a minimum of one engineer, holding a relevant domestic core ACS or an aligned gas services NVQ/SVQ (6012), and for non-domestic a relevant core assessment plus one other ACS category. Once you are qualified and registered, to show your customers that you are on the Gas Safe Register, you will need to show the new logo on your stationery, forms, adverts, clothing and vehicles. Logos are available for registered engineers to download from our website or by request on CD. You’ll also have access to a technical helpline and you’ll receive Registered Gas Engineer, a monthly magazine with news and features, plus a pull-out-and-keep standards update and technical alerts such as manufacturer’s recalls. It’s time to be Gas Safe If you would like to ask us a question about registration or would like a copy of our free information pack ‘Becoming Gas Safe Registered’, please email register@gassaferegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5577 |

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week |
Carbon Monoxide Awareness WeekCarbon monoxide (CO) poisoningIn November 2008, HSE supported the third CO Awareness Week organised by CO-Awareness. The aim of the week is to reduce incidents, fatalities and ill health due to carbon monoxide poisoning by raising awareness amongst consumers. CO is a colourless and odourless gas caused by faulty or badly installed gas appliances. Symptoms include drowsiness, headaches, nausea and breathlessness[1]. There are a number of simple steps that gas consumers can take to keep themselves safe[2] from these risks. Lord McKenzie of Luton, Department for Work and Pensions Minister with responsibility for health and safety, addressed the launch event at the House of Lords on Monday 17th November and the closing event at Liverpool Town hall on Friday 21st November. Amongst other matters, Lord McKenzie spoke about the new gas registration scheme[3] and what it will mean for consumers, gas engineers and other gas industry stakeholders. By lawThe Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 place duties on gas consumers, engineers, suppliers and landlords. Ventilation and flues are covered by The Building Regulations. By law, anyone carrying out work on gas appliances or fittings as part of their business must be competent and a registered gas fitter[4]. CO alarmsHSE strongly recommends the use of audible CO alarms as a useful back-up precaution, but they must not be regarded as a substitute for proper installation and maintenance of gas appliances by a registered gas engineer. CO alarms should comply with European standard EN 50291 and should be installed, checked and serviced in line with the manufacturer's instructions. Further informationHSE have produce a range of free leaflets and information sheets for further advice[5] or see the gas webpages on the HSE website and the DH public information leaflet on the risks of CO poisoning which has recently been updated provides useful advice. |

CTS Consultants |
Training package for New entrants to the Gas Industry. We train nationally across England, Scotland and Wales. We commence with their on job training and deliver one on one training of the theory whilst we are training the practical in real life situations, on real gas, in real properties covering all of the essential elements. We then take the candidates into the centre, (we have a broad number of national centres we use for this) where we re-do their theory and practical in the centre environment. We feel this essential because passing their ACS does not make them a Safe, Confident Engineer in the field, and vice versa. Our training then includes all aspects of the job from commissioning, servicing, repairs, etc.. then finally results in their real life Assessments at a different Centre, with a different Assessor. All field and centre training is carried out by qualified and approved trainers. Once the engineer has successfully completed their Initial Gas, Boiler Repairs, Service, Commission, and Service Training, and essentially identifying and actioning Unsafe Situations Training, they are Assessed by a third Party to prove they can work Solo. We include 6 months post support. Ours is a complete training and business support package. |
